A dive bezel turns only counterclockwise so an accidental knock cannot make the displayed elapsed time look shorter. The direction adds a simple margin of safety.

1. Set the zero marker. When timing begins, rotate the triangle on the bezel until it lines up with the minute hand. Do not force a one-way bezel in the opposite direction.
2. Read the elapsed minutes. As the minute hand advances, the bezel graduation it points to shows how many minutes have passed. Seiko’s official rotating-bezel instructions demonstrate this method.
3. Understand the safeguard. If the bezel is knocked farther counterclockwise, its zero marker moves earlier. The reading then becomes longer than the true elapsed time, not shorter. A clockwise shift could hide elapsed time, so the one-way mechanism blocks that direction.
Watcher Insight: the bezel is a backup timing reference, not proof that a watch is suitable for diving. Follow the instructions for your exact model and use proper diving instruments and procedures.
