Fog inside a watch crystal can be harmless if it clears quickly, but persistent mist or droplets can signal a sealing problem. The timing matters.

1. Dry the outside first. Wipe the crystal with a soft, dry cloth. If a light haze disappears within a few minutes as the watch and surrounding air equalize, Citizen says there is generally no problem.
2. Watch for persistence. Fog that remains, returns repeatedly, or forms visible droplets beneath the crystal is different. Seiko warns that prolonged internal condensation can mean the watch’s water-resistant performance has deteriorated.
3. Protect it from more water. Do not operate the crown or pushers while the watch is wet. Arrange inspection with the maker, retailer, or a qualified watchmaker; Citizen’s official fogging guidance recommends service when the haze lasts.
Watcher Insight: a water-resistance rating is not a lifetime guarantee. Seals age, and damage can reduce protection.
