A replacement watch stem is usually supplied long because the final length depends on the movement, case, crown, and case tube. It must be fitted to the actual watch.
If the stem is left too long, the crown may stand away from the case or fail to screw down fully. Cut it too short and the crown may not reach every winding and setting position—or the stem may need replacing.
The safe method is gradual: confirm the correct stem, thread on the crown, test the fit, remove a very small amount, deburr the end, and test again. The crown’s gasket and screw-down action, when present, must also be accounted for.
This is why a stem described as “compatible” is not necessarily ready to install. Compatibility gets the right part into the movement; careful fitting makes it work correctly in the case.
Watcher Insight: never copy a stem length blindly from another build. Small differences in crowns, tubes, movement holders, and case geometry can change the required length.
