1-Minute Watch Lesson #037 – Why Use a Dial Protector When Removing Watch Hands?

A dial protector provides a barrier while watch hands are removed. It helps keep hand-removal tools from marking the dial’s finished surface.

1. Protect the finish. The tool’s job is to lift the hands, not to scrape the dial. Horotec’s hand-removal catalogue explicitly pairs hand levers with plastic dial protectors for this purpose.

2. Keep the barrier clean. Check the protector and dial for loose grit before positioning it. A particle trapped underneath can still mark the surface. A protective sheet is not a guarantee against damage.

3. Do not force the setup. The protector does not make it safe to bend hands or lever against raised markers. If it will not fit without force, or you cannot control the removal tool, stop and use a watchmaker.

Watcher Insight: protection matters during removal; hand clearance matters after refitting. These are separate checks.
