1-Minute Watch Lesson #011 – What Is Automatic Winding in Watches?
Automatic winding is what allows a watch to power itself using your wrist movement.
Inside an automatic watch, there’s a small rotating weight called a rotor.
As you move your wrist throughout the day, the rotor spins and winds the mainspring.
This stored energy is what keeps the watch running.
Unlike manual (hand-wound) watches, you don’t need to wind an automatic watch every day — as long as you wear it regularly.
However, if you leave it off your wrist for a couple of days, it will stop once the power reserve runs out.
That’s why understanding how automatic watches work is essential when choosing between different movement types.
