Who Really Makes a Watch? Ownership, Movements, Assembly, and Service

Who makes a watch? Usually, the honest answer is not one company doing everything. A brand may own the name and design the product while specialist suppliers produce the movement, dial, case, hands, crystal, bracelet, or clasp. A separate facility may assemble and test it, and another network may handle distribution and service.

None of that automatically makes the watch less authentic or less valuable. The useful question is whether each responsibility is disclosed clearly—and whether the finished watch is designed, assembled, tested, warranted, and serviceable to the standard its price and story imply.

The Short Answer: Separate the Name From the Work

A logo tells you who presents the watch to the market. It does not, by itself, tell you who designed the case, engineered the movement, manufactured the dial, fitted the hands, regulated the calibre, performed the water-resistance test, or will supply parts later.

The clearest way to understand who makes a watch is to separate ten layers:

A strong brand can outsource several of these layers and still create a coherent, original, well-supported watch. A weak brand can claim extensive control while giving buyers no useful evidence.

Why “Independent,” “Microbrand,” and “Manufacture” Are Not Enough

These words describe different things, and they are often used as if they were interchangeable.

  • Independent normally describes ownership: the company is not controlled by a larger watch group. It does not prove that components or movements are made internally.
  • Microbrand usually describes scale, distribution, and a founder-led operating model. There is no single technical definition that tells you how much manufacturing happens inside the company.
  • Manufacture is commonly used for meaningful internal movement or production capability, but the exact scope still needs explanation.
  • In-house should identify a specific operation or component. “In-house movement,” “in-house dial production,” and “assembled in our workshop” are three different claims.
  • Swiss Made is a regulated origin marking, not a promise that every component came from one building or even one supplier.

A Current Transparency Case: Gallet and Breitling

Gallet’s 2026 return is useful because its current operating relationship is stated directly. In its official September 3 announcement, Gallet says the revived brand is manufactured by Breitling and supported by Breitling’s distribution and after-sales network. It launched four collections, while the three anniversary chronographs use Breitling’s hand-wound B09 calibre.

Those disclosures do not answer every historical or product-quality question, but they answer several important present-day ones: the manufacturing infrastructure is identified, the movement source is named, and the service and distribution route is not hidden. Readers can evaluate the watches without pretending that the brand is a tiny isolated workshop or dismissing it simply because another company provides the industrial base.

The current corporate relationship and collection claims can be checked in the official Gallet relaunch announcement and the Gallet Classics technical release. They are primary sources for the company’s present claims, not neutral proof of every historical anecdote associated with the name.

Movement Source Is Only One Part of the Answer

Collectors often use the movement as shorthand for the whole watch. That is understandable: the calibre controls the functions, hand positions, winding and setting behavior, service route, and much of the case architecture. But a supplied movement does not mean the surrounding watch designed itself.

A brand using a third-party calibre may still define the case geometry, dial construction, hand lengths, crown feel, movement holder, water-resistance target, regulation standard, and final quality-control process. Another brand may buy an exclusive-looking movement but invest very little in the finished product around it.

When evaluating a movement claim, ask:

  1. Who created the base architecture?
  2. Who manufactured the movement?
  3. Is the calibre standard, specially specified, modified, decorated, or fitted with an exclusive module?
  4. Who regulates and tests it after casing?
  5. Are technical documents, replacement parts, and qualified service available?

Official movement-maker documentation is often more useful than marketing shorthand. The watch brand must still explain what it does with that movement inside the finished product.

Manufacturing, Assembly, and Finishing Are Different Claims

A company can design a component without machining it. It can manufacture a component without assembling the watch. It can assemble the watch without producing the movement. It can apply a genuine hand finish to selected surfaces without making the underlying part.

Clear language should name the operation:

  • “Designed by us” should describe original design responsibility.
  • “Made for us” should acknowledge outside production to the brand’s specification.
  • “Assembled in our workshop” should describe final assembly, not imply raw component manufacture.
  • “Hand-finished” should identify what was polished, brushed, engraved, painted, heat-treated, textured, or adjusted by hand.
  • “Tested by us” should explain the tests performed and whether they apply to every finished watch or only a prototype.

The Dial Shows Why the Supply Chain Matters

A dial can involve substrate production, stamping or machining, surface preparation, printing, index manufacture, lume application, pad printing, lacquering, engraving, hand painting, and final inspection. Those operations may happen under one roof or across several specialist suppliers.

The meaningful questions are concrete. Who created the artwork? Who produced the base? Who applied the texture or finish? Are the indexes stock or custom? How is the dial mounted? Was hand clearance checked with the actual case and movement? The answers reveal more than the phrase “custom dial.”

Service Is Part of Who Makes the Watch

The sale is not the end of the product. A credible operating model should explain who receives a warranty claim, where the watch is inspected, whether the movement can be serviced or exchanged, whether seals and proprietary components remain available, and who is responsible for communication.

This is especially important for a revived name, a young microbrand, or a watch with proprietary external parts. A familiar base movement can simplify mechanical service, but it does not solve a damaged custom hand, crown, bezel, dial, bracelet link, or case component. Conversely, a vertically integrated movement is not automatically reassuring if the owner has no practical service route.

A buyer should be able to ask: if the watch needs regulation next year—or a crown and dial ten years from now—who is expected to help?

  5. Where does final assembly happen?
  6. What does “handmade” or “hand-finished” refer to specifically?
  7. What testing does every finished watch receive?
  8. Who provides the warranty and who performs the work?
  9. Which parts are likely to remain available after the warranty ends?
  10. Does the price make sense for the disclosed work, execution, support, and originality?

No brand needs to publish the private name of every supplier. Commercial confidentiality is real. But a company can still describe the division of responsibility honestly enough for a buyer to understand what is original, what is supplied, what is done at the bench, and what support exists after the sale.

The most credible brands do not need to pretend one pair of hands did everything. They explain where the important decisions and operations happen, take responsibility for the finished product, and give the buyer a believable path back when the watch needs care.
